DA, GMM at odds over meters

Donald Green, the municipality spokesperson, said the meters do comply with SABS standards.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality refuted claims by the DA in Mpumalanga that the municipality might be exposing residents to radiation danger by installing electricity smart meters that might not be approved by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

Based on the DA’s investigations, they found that these smart meters do not have an SABS accreditation certificate.

The DA recently decided to call for the immediate halt of the installation of these meters and the establishment of an ad hoc committee in council.

Municipality spokesperson Donald Green said the municipality verified the smart meters being installed to ensure any infrastructure replaced in the municipal network meets the standard and is over and above the national standard.

Green said those meters complied with SABS standards.

“The standards for all those meters also meet the SANS 1524-1, which proves that the meters do meet the calibration standard and electromagnetic interference (EMI) with the international standard IEC 62055-31; IEC 62053-21; IEC62052-11 and the municipality is continuing to roll out the meters,” said Green.
