Secunda residents can make use of these labour services

“Our Vocational Rehabilitation Bursary Scheme aims to continually expand the chances of being employed as well as for the unemployed to become economically active,” said Masilo.

The Department of Employment and Labour in Secunda is appealing to the community to use the services and facilities in their offices.

These include Public Employment Services (PES), a new Unemployment Insurance Fund uFiling system and registration of job seekers.

According to Rosina Masilo, the deputy director of the Secunda Labour Centre, employees in every employment sector should know the minimum wage increases of every year.

“We are appealing to the employed and employers to visit our offices for information about the minimum wage and the other services.

“The Compensation Fund Act was amended where domestic workers are now also covered from 1994.

“We also offer bursaries and rehabilitation programmes to the unemployed. Our communities are unaware of this.

“Our vocational rehabilitation bursary scheme aims to continually expand the chances of being employed as well as for the unemployed to become economically active,” said Masilo.

She also said they extended the scheme to cover studies for the dependent children.

She said the purpose of the PES is to assist companies, workers and the unemployed to adjust to the changing labour market conditions and regulate both private and temporary employment agencies.

She also said PES assists those companies that are in distress and registers job vacancies and other employment opportunities.

Masilo said they facilitate the placing of work seekers with employers or in other work opportunities and the exchange of information among labour market participants, which includes education and training authorities.

“Our Work Seeker Service practitioner matches work seekers with the opportunity at the time, registers them first, including the retrenched to our Employment Service System (ESSA) and advises them to grab the education and training opportunities,” said Masilo.

She said the department also has Employment Counselling Services to assist job seekers with CV writing skills, job hunting, interview preparation, retrenchment counselling, work ethic and career guidance.

The department also conducts psychometric assessments, online programs and a small business development programme.

Masilo said the ESSA database accommodates all unemployed South African citizens, the underemployed and designated groups such as women, youth and people with disabilities.
