Youngster from eMba excels in athletics

“I am inspired to see more kids representing our province everywhere in different sports codes,” said Mthimunye.

My Ola Odeyemi (9) won two gold, a silver and a bronze medal for Mpumalanga at the Southern Africa Christian Schools Sport Association (SACSSA) National Championship held in Pietermaritzburg on September 29 and 30.

His first race was the U9 60m which he won. He achieved second place in the 80m sprint and third place in the relay.

My Ola was then selected to run in the relay for boys U10 as the closing runner where he helped the Mpumalanga team clinch the gold medal.

My Ola’s mentor, Sunnyboy Mthimunye, said he started training and mentoring the boy last year.

Mthimunye said his aim is to develop and unleash more hidden talents across the Govan Mbeki Municipality and mentor athletes to excel and perform at the highest level.

“I am inspired to see more kids representing our province everywhere in different sports codes,” said Mthimunye.

Mthimunye also attended the South African Indigenous Games Festival in Durban where he represented Mpumalanga in Driestokkies (triple jump). He coached six players and his team came second.
