Teacher and learner excel in skills competition

The skills competition is dedicated to the promotion of skilled trades and technologies as viable, first-choice career options for South African youth.

Aphiwe Mbokazi, a learner at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in eMbalenhle, and his welding teacher, Innocent Mokase, won prizes in the schools skills competition in Emalahleni (Witbank).

Mokase walked away with a gold medal in the teachers’ category and Aphiwe achieved a silver medal for his welding.

This annual schools skills competition, hosted by the Sasol Foundation and Kagiso Trust, saw learners and teachers from various schools compete against each other and demonstrate their skills when it comes to welding, construction and electrical work.

This competition aims to encourage young people to consider a trade as a career, and the many opportunities that people trained in these specialisations can have.

According to Noxolo Kahlana, head of the Sasol Foundation, the partners in the competition boost the vocational skills pool of the country and contribute to the goal of producing 30 000 artisans per year by 2030, as set out by the National Development Plan.

“For sustainable development to occur, there is an urgent need for us to pay significant attention to training highly skilled human resources to serve as key drivers of the economy.

“Skills competitions not only raise professional standards but also raise awareness and introduce the potential of a skilled career to a much wider audience,” says Noxolo Kahlana.
