Former policeman in Standerton arrested

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, provincial commissioner of police, used the opportunity to discourage the public from buying suspected stolen properties.

A former SAPS Constable (32) and three of his accomplices, aged between 25 and 40, were arrested in Standerton in the early hours of August 24.

According to a statement from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the police recovered suspected stolen property connected to a robbery incident in the morning of that day.

According to a report by the police, the SAPS in Standerton patrolled the area when they spotted four men in possession of some bags.

The officers stopped and searched the men.

One item they found in their bags was a cellphone reported stolen during a house robbery the previous day in the neighbourhood.

Upon further investigation, the police officers discovered the cellphone, and other items in possession of the suspects belonged to the complainant of the house robbery.

The suspects will possibly be charged for the house robbery incident. Investigators cannot rule out that they could have been involved in other house robberies in the vicinity.

The former police officer was part of visible policing in Standerton but was dismissed from work in February last year.

The four were expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on August 28.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the provincial commissioner of police, used the opportunity to discourage the public from buying suspected stolen properties.

“We are working with other law enforcement agencies in addressing the challenge of house robberies, as well as house burglaries, through arresting perpetrators,” the general said.

“The only way to stop the market for criminals is when community members are distancing themselves from purchasing these items.”
