Municipality leaves holes at disabled man’s house in Evander

Electricity has been fixed, but the pavement is destroyed.

A disabled man in Dublin Street is facing a huge challenge after electricity cables in front of his yard were worked on.

“Workers from Govan Mbeki Municipality fixed the cables at the end of May and now in August they still have not cleaned up their mess,” said the resident.

He and his family were left without electricity for four days at the end of May and when the cables were finally fixed, the resident’s front yard looked like a building site.

“I could not even see if there were any oncoming vehicles when I come out of my driveway because of all the heaps of sand the municipality left behind.”

Before returning to complete their job, municipal workers left the electrical cables open like this for days.

By July 31 the cable that the municipality fixed, blew and burnt and the resident was left without electricity again.

He had to sleep in his wheelchair for the night as he usually sleeps on a special mattress that prevents bed sores. The bed works with electricity.

“Municipal workers did fix the electricity by the next day, however, once again they left a mess and even destroyed the pavement.

“I am in a wheelchair. How am I supposed to fix the pavement and remove these heaps of sand?”

The Ridge Times asked the spokesman of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Donald Green, for comment.

Questions specifically formed around what the municipality’s procedure is when it comes to fixing electrical cables, if holes are often left open, if municipal workers go back to close holes dug to fix cables, how long after they fix it do they go back to close the holes and who will take responsibility if a child gets shocked when playing by the open cables.

He answered by saying the complaint was sorted.

However, by August 4 the paving was still not fixed and heaps of sand were still laying in front of the yard of the disabled resident.
