Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton stand at 94.4%

The majority of the other listed dams in the Gert Sibande District also recorded declines in water levels.

The water volumes at Grootdraai Dam continue to drop.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) state of reservoirs report, dated July 17, Grootdraai Dam recorded a further 0.1% from last week’s 94.5% to 94.4%.

The majority of the other listed dams in the Gert Sibande District also recorded declines in water levels, except for the Vygeboom and Morgenstond dams that recorded slight improvements from 100.4% to 100.5% and 99.1% to 99.2% respectively.

Joining the Grootdraai Dam on the decline mode, Nooitgedacht dropped from 97.4% to 96.8%, Jericho from 87.0% to 86.4%, Westoe from 72.9% to 71.5% and Heyshope from 100.0% to 99.9%.

According to a statement from the department, water levels in Mpumalanga recorded a slight drop from 98.0% to 97.9%, which is a reflection of levels in the Water Management Areas (WMAs) as the Olifants dropped from 89.8% to 89.6% and the Inkomati-Usuthu slightly dropped from 98.1% to 98.0%.

In terms of the districts, the Gert Sibande District dropped from 96.1% to 95.9%, in line with the situation in the listed dams in the district.

The department called on the public to be more responsible and use the available water wisely and sparingly, taking into consideration that South Africa is a water-scarce country and that water has no substitute.
