Parolees in Standerton arrested after found in possession of suspected stolen items

Investigators cannot rule out the possibility that they could have been involved in other cases, given the spate of burglary cases in the Standerton area.

The SAPS in Standerton ensured that four parolees are back in custody after being nabbed with items suspected to have been stolen during a house break-in committed in one of the shops in Standerton on July 15.

According to a statement from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, police in partnership with other stakeholders launched a search for the suspects.

Information led them to a certain house where the suspects, were found with suspected stolen items, as well as loose dagga.

It was discovered that the suspects were released on parole last month.

Investigators cannot rule out the possibility that they could have been involved in other cases, given the spate of burglary cases in the Standerton area.

Police said the probe will not only be limited to house break-ins but also to check whether the parolees were not implicated in other offences.

The suspects were expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on July 19, facing the charges related to house break-in and theft, as well as possession of suspected stolen properties.

The provincial commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, welcomed the arrest and commended the positive partnership displayed between police and other stakeholders.

“We are working closely with the Department of Justice and Correctional Services so that parolees are arrested and returned to correctional facilities whenever they violate their conditions,” the General said.

According to Manamela, some parolees think they have a ticket to commit a crime.

“That situation can not be allowed and we will not hesitate to deal with such offenders.”
