Vandals raid grader in eMbalenhle

“We will not tolerate vandalism and will work with the police to pursue the offenders.”

The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s technical yard in eMbalenhle has become a target for criminals. A municipal grader was stripped of wiring in a break-in on the morning of July 1.

Criminals also recently entered the technical yard and tied up a security guard before breaking into the offices and stealing electricity cables and other equipment.

The municipality condemned the vandalism of municipal infrastructure and machinery because it directly affected service delivery.

Road maintenance is a high priority for the municipality.

Donald Green, the municipal spokesperson, said it was challenging for them to satisfy the community’s needs when the unnecessary costs and delays caused by the vandalism of machinery burdened the municipality.

“Not only will this cost the municipality more money to repair, but it also delays our road maintenance schedule. We will not tolerate vandalism and will work with the police to pursue the offenders.”

Green said the municipality continued to beef up security as part of its efforts to deal with the vandalism of infrastructure.
