Police arrest mother who leaves baby alone in eMzinoni

Mother remains in custody.

An 18-year-old mother was arrested on July 10 for child neglect and abandonment. The young mother allegedly left her two-year-old daughter at home alone on Friday evening (July 7) to visit her boyfriend.

Neighbours heard the baby crying on Monday morning (July 10) and called the police.

The police found the baby alone, abandoned and cold inside the house which they had to break open because the mother had locked the door and had taken the key with her.

The baby girl was still in hospital for a medical check-up at the time of going to print.

The mother appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on July 12 and will remain in custody.
Her case was postponed to July 18.

Warrant Officer Gloudie Sachse, of the Family Violence, Child Abuse and Sexual Offence Unit of the police, said it is a great concern that so many people are leaving their underaged children at home alone, especially during school holidays and over weekends.
