Cullinan community pitches in to save rhino orphans

“We decided to join the #Lositbeter, Rhino Connect and Groot FM Milk Drive because the idea is unique just based on the science behind these babies requiring low fat as opposed to full fat milk,” said Bekker.

Thea da Silva and councillor Johannes Bekker recently collaborated with Groot FM, Cullinan SPAR, Cullinan Rugby Club and several residents during a campaign to collect 1 000 six-pack cartons of fat-free milk for rhino baby orphans.

According to Bekker, rhino calves cannot drink full fat milk.

“The ideal is to give them specialised formula milk, but due to the cost of this formula, cows’ milk is an alternative for charities who solely rely on private donations.

“We decided to join the #Lositbeter, Rhino Connect and Groot FM Milk Drive because the idea is unique just based on the science behind these babies requiring low fat as opposed to full fat milk,” said Bekker.

Collectively, they managed to gather 560 cartons of milk and presented it to Groot FM.

Bekker thanked the Cullinan community for their generous contribution towards the conservation of rhino calves.

“These babies’ survival depends on us and it is our responsibility to protect and preserve them.”
