Blind woman from eMbalenhle dies

Ridge Times wrote about Martha Nkema’s plight in January.

Martha Nkema (26) from eMbalenhle, who turned blind when she was 22 years old, died after a short illness at her home.

In a story published in January, Nkema told Ridge Times her parents were still alive when they took her to a doctor who diagnosed her with diabetes and high blood pressure.

After the death of her parents, she had no one to help her apply for an identity document and as a result, she could not apply for a disability grant which she believed would have alleviated her struggle for survival.

Nkema was a member of the Khuthala Association for the Blind before she died. She was laid to rest on April 20.
