eMbalenhle case of baby’s corpse in cooler bag goes to high court

The police have the post-mortem results but are still waiting for DNA.

The case of a woman (30) from eMbalenhle who was caught at Evander Hospital with the body of a baby in a cooler bag in October last year will be heard in the Delmas High Court.

The State is awaiting a date.

Constable Busi Mthethwa, the eMbalenhle police spokesperson, said the detectives have received the post-mortem results, but DNA analyses are still outstanding.

Mthethwa said the woman allegedly gave birth to a boy in May 2022.

“The baby was allegedly not breathing and his body was then wrapped in a plastic bag and placed in a freezer.”

According to Mthethwa, the woman arrived at Evander Hospital with a cooler bag in October but did not approach any health worker.

She remained in the waiting room for two days.

“When the child’s father arrived at the hospital, he demanded to see the file opened for his child, but to no avail.

“He was convinced that his girlfriend had given birth at the hospital and that is when the nurses found out about the dead baby in the cooler bag,” explained Mthethwa.

The woman was arrested on October 5 and she appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on October 10. She was released on warning.

According to Mthethwa, the woman is facing a murder charge.

Her name is withheld to protect her other minor children.
