Famous couple visits Little Paws Big Hearts with outreach at Trichardt

Animal welfare organisation creates awareness of how to take good care of your pet.

Two well-known social media personalities, Malcolm and Kiki Wentzel, visited the Holfontein informal settlement together with the animal welfare organisation, Little Paws Big Hearts, on March 4.

Kiki was also recently seen in the KykNet series, Desperate Housewives of Pretoria, while Malcolm and the couple’s domestic worker, who are famous for their funny TikTok videos, also made an appearance in a few episodes.

The Wentzels began a movement on social media, FKN Army, whose aim is to uplift others through motivation, inspiration and help.

They saw Little Paws Big Hearts’ posts on social media and decided to reach out. The Wentzels spent the day with volunteers and founders of Little Paws Big Hearts, Louis and Sonja Kempen.

“We walk from house to house and check on each animal. We then talk to the owners about their animals and build a relationship with them,” said Sonja.

The volunteers walk about 17km during outreach and Sonja said they began walking from house to house during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We look at the animals’ condition, we check their gums, ears and if they have any wounds. Those animals who are seriously injured go to Evander Vet.

“We also deworm and dip the dogs for tick fever. It works very well in the informal settlement and tick fever here is minimal.”

Little Paws Big Hearts was founded by the Kempen’s 10 years ago and they educate and create awareness about taking good care of animals.

They distribute pamphlets each time they visit the informal settlement and they are in the process of organising an information day in Holfontein.

They are planning outreach work in the Afghanistan informal settlement near Kinross soon and they need support to do sterilisations and vaccinations.

The FKN Army donated R10 000 to Little Paws Big Hearts and gave them 1.1 tons of dog food.

“We always need dog food and also tyres, dog houses and cat food,” said Sonja.
