Vukta Youth Desk wants to transform taxi industry

Young people have innovative ideas to implement technology for everyday communting.

SECUNDA – The Vukanini Taxi Association’s Youth Desk wants to transform the taxi industry to adapt to the changing world.

These young people said for years, the industry was left behind in technology and is still operating in the old world. According to the youth desk, the taxi industry must come up with a technological system to replace the current cash payment system for commuters.

Elvis Mkhwebane, the desk spokesperson, said the vision to establish the youth desk was proposed by Fanyana Sibanyoni, the Vukta chairperson, a South African National Taxi Council Mpumalanga chairperson and also the Santaco national deputy president.

Mkhwebane said the taxi association experienced many challenges when taxi owners grow old or die. That is why Sibanyoni saw the need for owners’ children to be involved in the industry.

“Most taxi owners’ children don’t know anything about the taxi industry and when parents pass on they suffer. As young people, we need to bring new ideas that will contribute to the development and renewal of the taxi industry.

“We know that our country is facing high unemployment, especially among young people, but if they can change their mindset towards the taxi industry, they will realise that we have employment opportunities, ”said Mkhwebane.

Mkhwebane said most owners of mini-taxis in eMbalenhle employ foreigners because the local youth don’t see themselves working as mini-taxi drivers.

“They think it is not a good paying job and the foreign nationals took advantage of that.”
