Bronkhorstspruit’s Tex Steyn loses battle against cancer

“Tex was, and will always be, a legend to his children and grandchildren. His memory will live on in our hearts, and his powerful musical voice will fill our ears always.”

Tex Steyn, a long-time resident of Bronkhorstspruit, well known and loved by the community, died on December 4, aged 80.

Born Retief Hendrik Steyn in the Tsitsikama Valley in 1942, he had to learn independence early on because he lost his parents at a young age.

According to his family, Steyn made it to the big city of Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha). There he lived a busy life, working, dancing, and playing in music sessions, in many of which he was a star.

Soon, the name ‘Retief’ became ‘Tex’, and it stuck with him for the rest of his life. Steyn also lived in Durban for a time.

He settled in Bronkhorstspruit in 1974 with his wife, Phillis.

“It was a place he came to love, coming full circle and finishing his life on the platteland,” said his daughter, Tess.

In typical Tex fashion, Steyn became well known in Bronkies.

“Our dad loved to hang out with friends, at home, in the veld, or at the dam. It was always family, family and friends, or his children’s friends,” Tess added.

“He was the go-to guy for help; he could always find a way to fix a problem or lend a helping hand.”

With the guitar close by to fill the air with music, funny ditties, and many belly laughs, there was always a good time to be had.

Later in life, he found joy in cooking for friends and family. If you happened to find yourself at the dam, there was always a good stew or soup in the pot.

“In recent years, Dad fiercely fought and beat cancer once, but, sadly, the second time around he was not so fortunate,” said daughter, Juanita.

During the last few months of his life, the family spent quality time with Tex. They celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by love and family.

“Tex was, and will always be, a legend to his children and grandchildren. His memory will live on in our hearts, and his powerful musical voice will fill our ears always.”

Steyn is survived by his wife Phillis, children Tess, Juanita, Vanessa and Xavier, and grandchildren, Jessica, Armand, Cobus, Sharik and Jaiden.

According to the family, it was his wish to not have a funeral or memorial service.

“Thank you for understanding that we are honouring his wishes. RIP, dearest Tex.”
