Motorists must beware of spiking on N4

“Most of these incidents happen between 01:00 and 03:00 in the morning. Roads of concern are the R513, R104 and the N4.”

A man was shot during an attempted hijack and managed to drive 30 kilometres to a filling station in Pretoria.

According to a statement from Emer-G-Med paramedics who responded to the scene of the shooting incident at a petrol station in Hatfield, they found, upon arrival, a luxury vehicle peppered with bullet holes.

It was further reported that the driver of the luxury vehicle came under fire from an unknown number of armed suspects in an attempted hijacking at the Diamond Hill Toll Gate Plaza in the Cullinan region.

The incident happened at around 01:45 on the morning of Saturday, October 1. The wounded victim evaded the suspected hijackers and continued to drive to the petrol station in Pretoria.

The victim suffered a single bullet wound to the leg. He was treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Streeknuus received reports of as many as four spiking incidents, which occurred on the same date on the N4.

“It can be confirmed that during the early morning hours of October 1, at least four spiking incidents occurred in the vicinity of Donkerhoek and Rayton,” said Ross Welsh, Boschkop CPF Chairman.

Welsh further stated that it is extremely difficult to track down the perpetrators because they use different methods and because of the huge area in which they operate.

“We as the CPF sharpen up our patrols in a certain area, but then the perpetrators move to another area, it is therefore very difficult to clamp down on the spikers and robbers.”

Welch added that motorists should refrain from driving during the night.

“Most of the successful spiking and robbing incidents happen between 01:00 and 03:00 in the morning. Roads of concern are the R513, R104 and the N4.

“Make use of a live location on your phone if possible and within safety boundaries, motorist should try to drive in the middle of the road and set the vehicle’s lights on bright when possible.

“It is important not to stop when you hit something on the road. Drive to the nearest safe place,” Welsh added.

In yet another incident, rocks were apparently placed on the N4 near the Diamond Hill Toll Gate Plaza.

This incident happened at around 02:30 during the morning of Tuesday, September 27. According to another trusted source, a vehicle hit the rocks and came to a standstill.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman, was then pulled into the field by four armed suspects and robbed of all her belongings as well as everything of value inside her vehicle.

The Bronkhorstspruit AfriForum Neighbourhood watch assisted the victim on the scene. Motorists are therefore warned to be extremely cautious and vigilant when travelling on the N4, R104 and R513.

“It is also important to report these cases to the police,” Welsh concluded.
