Body found in Secunda is that of missing murder suspect

Velly Mcunu's SIM card, ID and clothes were discovered on the body of a man hanging from a tree in an open field near Tambotie Street near the Palms shopping centre on January 20.

The Secunda police believe they have found the body of Velly Vincent Mcunu (42) who disappeared without a trace after his girlfriend was stabbed to death in Paardekraal Street earlier this month.

Mcunu’s SIM card, ID and clothes were discovered on the body of a man hanging from a tree in an open field near Tambotie Street near the Palms shopping centre on January 20.

A homeless man came across the decomposed corpse and the police were called.

Mcunu stabbed his girlfriend, Busisiwe Precious Mkhabela (39) to death with a knife outside her house in Paardekraal Street on January 2.

The couple had a fight and Mkhabela began walking towards the gate when Mcunu followed her, sat on top of her and began stabbing her.

A neighbour witnessed the brutal attack and called the police.

According to police reports, Mkhabela was stabbed several times in her upper body.

Mkhabela was certified dead at the scene.

The police and the family of Mkhabela were searching for Mcunu who disappeared right after her murder.

The dead man in the tree was wearing the same outfit Mcunu wore when he disappeared.

Although Mcunu’s family has been informed and have also identified the body on January 24, the police have also sent a DNA sample to their lab for testing.

The police are ruling Mcunu’s death a suicide after he had murdered Mkhabela. Documents to this effect is being filed today. (January 24).
