Standerton Court metes out sentence for theft at Eskom

Electricity provider welcomes sentence.

Katlego Twala, an Eskom employee at Tutuka Power Station near Standerton, was sentenced to one-year imprisonment or to pay a fine of R10 000 wholly suspended for five years on December 8 at the Standerton Regional Court for theft.

Twala was linked to the theft of five drums of hydraulic fluid oil (fire-resistant fluid oil) from his workplace in October last year.

The court also declared Twala unfit to possess a firearm.

Eskom spokesperson Juanita Vogel, said Eskom welcomed the sanction by the court and thanked the police, its own internal investigators and the National Prosecuting Authority for the positive outcome of the case.

Botse Sikhwitshi, the acting general manager for security at Eskom, said, “Eskom has a zero-tolerance stance on acts of dishonesty and views the conduct of the employee as unacceptable.

“We will continue working on flushing out the minority that cast a shadow on the organisation.”

He urged the public to report information regarding illegal electricity sales, fraud, theft of coal, theft of fuel oil and diesel and all other electricity-related crimes to the Eskom Crime Line at 0800 11 27 22.
