eMba police recovered cash after robbery

Mthethwa said one of the suspects snatched up the guard’s gun and entered the ATM where the other security officer was working on the machine.

Three suspects were arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery in eMbalenhle on January 21.

According to Constable Busi Mthethwa, eMbalenhle police spokesperson, the CIT security guards were busy inside the ATM at a business in Ext Seven, eMbalenhle, when the three suspects approached the guard outside.

They were carrying a bag. The guard tried to fire off a warning shot but fell.

Mthethwa said one of the suspects snatched up the guard’s gun and entered the ATM where the other security officer was working on the machine.

The suspect exited with two dispensers.

The guard outside ran to his work vehicle and chased after the suspects who were running to their vehicle, a silver grey Renault with no registration number, that was parked not far from the ATM.

Police spotted the vehicle and gave chase while calling for backup. Mthethwa said with the help of a private security company, they arrested one of the suspects.

The other two were arrested when one was shot as he tried to retaliate. He was taken to hospital.

An amount of R18 000 and the security guard’s firearm were recovered from the suspects. Mthethwa said the suspected armed robbers will soon appear before the court.

The investigation continues.
