Secunda’s father and son duo compete in MRSSA Racing event in Delmas

Father and son duo Nicho (37) and Robert (14) Jonck competed in the motorcycle racing series (MRSSA) racing event at Red Star Raceway in Delmas, on October 4 and 5.

The first day’s practice was a windy day adding some additional challenges to the 4.2km tight and technical racetrack.

Both Nicho and Robert managed to get in some practice time before the race day. The weather was much better on the main event day with almost no wind and clear skies.

Robert was first up in the short circuit 150cc class. He qualified in eighth place in the short circuit 150cc class riding a CBR 125 R.

In both races Robert finished in eighth place, giving him eighth place overall on the day. Nicho was next in the CSRA (Classic Racing Association) class.

Classic racing is motorcycles from the 70s to 90s with engine capacities ranging from 599cc to 1300cc. Nicho qualified in the fifth position.

In race one, Nicho bogged down off the line and went into turn one in eleventh position. He managed to fight his way back to fourth in race one riding the only 600cc in the class against a majority of GSX-R1100’s.

In race two it was a much better start and Nicho managed to secure fourth again. He finished the day in the fourth spot overall and won the modern-era class riding his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Robert was up next in the Sub500 (300cc to 499cc) race, riding his Yamaha YZF-R3. He qualified in fifth position.

In race one he had an ongoing battle with Tristan Henning. Henning ran into the back of Robert going into turn two on lap five. Henning crashed out and Robert ran off track after the contact.

Fortunately, Tristan did not sustain any injuries and Robert rejoined the race finishing in fifth place. In race two he managed to finish in fifth position again.

This gave him fifth overall possession on the day and he managed to win the 300cc class. For more information, visit Red Star Raceway website at https://www.redstarraceway.co.za
