eMbalenhle SAPS warns community on hitchhiking

According to Constable Busi Mthethwa, the eMbalenhle police spokesperson, a 30-year-old man was recently robbed of money and other belongings and then dumped near Thokomala.

The eMbalenhle police are warning the public not to hitchhike after a man was robbed on September 27.

According to Constable Busi Mthethwa, the eMbalenhle police spokesperson, the 30-year-old man was robbed of money and other belongings and then dumped near Thokomala in Kinross.

Mthethwa said the victim was hitchhiking to Leandra near the Khaya Mall when two men and a woman in a white BMW offered him a lift.

The hitchhiker got into the BMW, but before they reached the N17 filling station, the woman took out a firearm and pointed it at the victim.

Mthethwa said they drove on past the fourway stop in Kinross and on towards Kriel. The driver stopped the car just after they passed the Ethokomala School.

“The other two men searched the victim while the woman held the gun on him,” said Mthethwa.

They stole two cellphones and cash and then left the victim in the veld where another motorist spotted and helped him.

The victim was taken to the eMbalenhle Police Station where a robbery case was opened. Mthethwa warned residents to be careful of hitchhiking because it is unsafe.
