Primary school in eMbalenhle hosts programmes to interact with parents, community

Teacher Gugu Gumede said they began with a girls’ awareness campaign two years ago after noticing their behaviour in class.

The Vukuzithathe Primary School in eMbalenhle held its annual boys and girls campaign to encourage parents to be aware of their children’s changing behaviour on September 7.

Teacher Gugu Gumede said they began with a girls’ awareness campaign two years ago after noticing their behaviour in class.

“As teachers, we noticed our girls’ behaviour was not good. We decided to bring parents, learners and the community together in one place to find ways to assist our learners.

“Our first girls awareness programme yielded good results through the involvement of government institutions and other NGOs,” said Gumede.

According to Gumede, they realised boys also needed guidance, especially on bullying behaviour.

“We also received reports that some were attending initiation schools without their parents’ consent. We then organised the boys’ awareness programme and later combined the two,” explained Gumede.

She said the programmes aim to teach boys and girls to tolerate one another and how to live alongside each other.

“Teachers spend more time with these children than their parents, and we often pick up on changes in a child’s behaviour. Programmes such as these are crucial because we can then interact with parents,” said Gumede.
