Learners participate in Sasol Energy Challenge in Secunda

Osizweni Primary School won the primary schools’ category.

Sasol hosted the regional leg of its Sasol Energy Innovation Challenge at the Sasol Recreation Club on August 31.

Young innovators from 21 schools in the Gert Sibande region participated in the challenge that showcased 54 projects.

The Sasol Foundation established this multi-stage competition in 2022. The regional winners will compete in the final round on September 12.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about renewable and alternative energy sources and develop science research skills. The project specifically targets Grades Four to 11 learners.

Sasol’s manager of media and communications, Nomia Machebe, said learners in the primary, secondary and technical schools’ categories showcased scientific projects that could give solutions to energy-related challenges.

The competition is aligned with the natural sciences, technology, physical sciences and life sciences curriculums, making the education department a critical stakeholder.

The finals will take place at the Graceland Hotel Casino and Country Club.

“Sasol is a significant investor and supporter of science and technology education in SA, and this challenge is part of Sasol’s interventions informed by a need to drive a meaningful change among the youth and prepare them for a future that will enable them to be economically sustainable,” said Machebe.

“To ensure learner support and project development in the competition, Sasol has partnered with Nka’thuto, an NGO specialing in science project school support, to work with registered schools to ensure they submit high-quality projects for the regional and final competitions.”
