Ronald Mashego, a bricklaying student from the Gert Sibande TVET College’s Skills Academy and Artisan Development Centre, will represent SA at the 47th International WorldSkills competition in Lyon, France, from September 11 to 17. He won the SA competition.

Surprisingly, as time went on, Mashego discovered a passion for this craft, finding joy and fulfilment in the art of bricklaying.

Now, armed with determination and a thirst for knowledge, Mashego is committed to honing his skills in the civil engineering space.

He aspired to make a meaningful career in the construction industry, using his expertise to contribute to the development and improvement of infrastructure. Mashego said the former competitor and national champion, Mncedisi Mkhaliphi, inspired his WorldSkills journey.

“I first learnt about the WorldSkills competition during an interview at the Gert Sibande TVET College Skills Academy,” he explained.

“While there, I overheard people discuss the remarkable achievements of the former champ, Mncedisi Mkhaliphi. It was then that I decided to also join the competition right after my apprentice programme.”

Mashego said he is prepared for the upcoming international rounds because he firmly believes the national rounds nurtured his strengths and capabilities effectively during the national rounds.

“I am confident that I have adequately faced most aspects of the competition. My focus now lies in enhancing my stamina because I was informed that there will be additional structures to construct in France,” he concluded.
