Cullinan celebrates Sir Cullinan Day

“It is an honour to remember the founder of Cullinan at the place where he walked more than a century ago,” says Ward 100 councillor, Johannes Bekker.

The Cullinan Tourism team, in collaboration with Ward 100 Councillor Johannes Bekker, on August 23, visited the statue erected in honour of Sir Thomas Cullinan.

Sir Thomas Cullinan, born in The Cape Colony in 1862, made significant contributions to the diamond industry.

He first settled in Barberton before moving to Johannesburg in 1887, where he began a career as a bricklayer.

Eventually, he turned to prospecting and discovered the Premier Diamond Fields in 1898. Sir Thomas was a co-founder and a member of what became the Transvaal Chamber of Industries and was knighted in 1910 for his remarkable contributions.

In addition to his significant achievements in mining and industry, he also has a town and the largest diamond ever found named after him. He married Annie Francis Harding in 1886 and passed away on 23 August 1936.

“It is an honour to remember the founder of Cullinan at the place where he walked more than a century ago,” said Bekker.

“This visit served as a reminder of his legacy and importance to our community and the diamond industry.”

“We look forward to more such commemorative events,” added Bekker.
