GMM Mayor says Eskom bill skyrocketed

“Eskom charged winter tariffs, and we consumed eight million more units of electricity.”

The Govan Mbeki Municipality mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, said the municipality for the first time received a skyrocketed bill of R153m from Eskom for their current account.

Zuma said when they queried it, Eskom raised issues, including winter charges and the high municipality electricity consumption.

“Eskom charged winter tariffs, and we consumed eight million more units of electricity. The new tariffs at Eskom caused a community outcry about the expensive electricity.

“This outcry is genuine because electricity is very expensive. It is not just because of us who are the suppliers, but also because of Eskom from whom we have to buy the expensive electricity,” said Zuma.

He said the municipality could pay Eskom R73m and R38m to Rand Water.
