Secunda gymnast wins silver in Mauritius

The gymnast from the Secunda Gymnastics Club excelled in Mauritius.

Tumelo Ngxongo (15), a Secunda Gymnastics Club member, earned a silver medal in the tumbling category of a competition held in Mauritius from August 8 to 12.

She was the only one from Secunda chosen to participate in this international competition. Ngxongo is a Grade 10 learner at Hoërskool Secunda, and she said she enjoyed the short trip to Mauritius.

“I am proud of myself and did not expect to get a place. The competition in Mauritius was not that tough,” said Ngxongo.

Ngxongo said she was a lazy child and did not want to do any sports, but her mom tried to convince her to play tennis, netball and hockey.

She did not enjoy it and decided to try gymnastics. She did artistic gymnastics when she was nine and stopped when she was 11.

She watched a movie about a gymnast, which inspired her to begin again. This time, she took up tumbling gymnastics.

In her free time, she tries to relax by reading novels. She is considering swimming as a sport next year.
