Lekwa requests the community to protect the sewerage infrastructure

The municipality is facing ongoing challenges in sewer blockages.

The Lekwa Local Municipality recently released a statement outlining problems the community might endure because of improper waste disposal. The municipality is facing ongoing challenges in sewer blockages.

These blockages occur due to incorrect disposal of items such as bottles, animal skins and intestines, blankets and food waste such as oil and grease.

“These items can cause serious damage such as blockages, overflows and costly repairs,” said Lubabalo Majenge, communications officer for the Lekwa Municipality.

These foreign objects enter the sewer system and accumulate to cause blockages. These blockages prevent wastewater from flowing freely and cause sewage overflows.

This poses a health risk to the community and can result in environmental damage, such as the contamination of water sources.

According to the National Water Act, it is illegal to dispose of harmful materials into water resources. This act states that everyone has a responsibility to protect water sources from misuse and pollution.

This act also empowers the municipality to penalise anyone who does not comply with these regulations.

The municipality recommends that people properly dispose of waste by using the designated waste disposal methods, especially for non-biodegradable items such as bottles and any form of solid waste.

Grease and oils should be collected in containers and disposed of in the trash.

“Remember that keeping our sewer system clear of foreign objects is a collective responsibility. When disposing of waste correctly, you help maintain a healthy environment and save our community from costly repairs,” said Majenge.
