Suspects appear in Bethal court for possession of drugs

The four suspects were arrested for possession of drugs to the estimated value of R3 000 during a crime prevention patrol in Bethal.

Suspects Thabiso Ntshangase (23), Mthokozisi Coka (28), Sipho Mkhabela (30) and Mbali Mkhonza (27) appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on August 21, on charges of possession of drugs.

The matter was postponed to September 5 for a formal bail application. All accused were remanded in custody.

The four were arrested by members of the crime prevention unit in Bethal comprising Sergeant Vusumuzi Mpila, Sergeant Lindiwe Mkhonto, Constable Mankweng Motloutsi and Constable Mercy Pule on August 20.

The spokesman for the Bethal police, Sergeant Thomas Mogadime said police noticed three men and a woman in a busy street in Bethal and police approached them.

“A request to search for them was granted.

“Police found small packs of substances wrapped in brown plastics on three of the suspects and multiple packs from the other suspect,” said Mogadime.

The suspects told the police that the contents in those packs were a substance known as nyaope, which is a dominant drug in the streets of Bethal and other areas within Govan Mbeki Municipality and the Gert Sibande District.

The police arrested the four suspects and they were further detained. The estimated street value of the drugs is R3 000. The contents seized will be used as evidence in court.
