Karate students compete in the Karate SA tournament in Secunda

Students have been chosen for the preliminary squad that will be competing in the Commonwealth Games happening in November in Durban.

Students from various clubs, representing their provinces from Mpumalanga, Free State, Gauteng, KZN and the Cape, were in action during the Karate South Africa Tournament held at Sasol Recreational Club on August 24.

Zhané Botha, Mrs Mpumalanga 2024, attended this tournament, which also formed part of the South African Women’s Karate Cup.

Students from the Universal Shotokan Karate Union excelled at this tournament and were chosen for the preliminary squad that will compete in an international event, the Commonwealth Games, in November in Durban.

At the event, Akani Mbambo received second place in the boys (8-9 years) kumite +30kg. Luninathi Khakhusi was second in girls (8-9 years) kumite -30kg.

In third in the boy’s (10-11 years) kumite -30kg was Jordan Malaz. Sandakahle Dlamini was third in the boys (10-11 years) kumite -30kg.



Jaden Malaza ended second in the boys’ (10-11 years) kumite -30kg. Lwandile Sikhundla had a first-place win in the boy’s (10-11 years) kumite -40kg.

Hlumelo Gxarisa finished first in the boy’s (10-11 years) kumite +40kg. Nani Hlongwa was third in the boys (10-11 years) kumite +40kg . In first place in the girls (10-11 years) kumite +45kg category was Lutendo Netshivhazwaulu.

Mbalentleyamatanza Gxarisa ended third in the girl’s (12-13 years) kumite +47kg. First in the cadet boys (14-15 years), kumite -52kg was Yamkela Khakhusi.

First place went to Nkateko Mawelela in the cadet boys (14-15 years) kumite -70kg. Londiwe Sindane was placed second in the cadet girls (14-15 years) kumite -54kg.

Mitchel Malaza finished first in the cadet girls (14-15 years) kumite +54kg. Owethu Sindane finished third in the junior male kata (16-17 years) and second in the kumite -61kg.
