Sasol helps first-time owners to buy a house

Fuel giant gives mining employees opportunity to buy first house.

eMBALENHLE – First-time homeowners of Sasol Mining had the opportunity to buy a house from Sasol through a special programme.

This initiative of Sasol is part of this company’s ongoing housing scheme under the social labour plan programme and about 40 mining employees received the keys to their very first own houses on August 12.

These houses are located in eMbalenhle and Secunda and Sasol launched this project in 2014. About 260 first-time homeowners bought houses from Sasol through this project.

“Through this initiative, Sasol is not just providing a roof over people’s heads, but we are restoring dignity and hope to those who thought owning a home was out of reach,” said Sandile Siyaya, senior vice president of Sasol Mining.

“By providing affordable housing to permanent Sasol Mining employees, Sasol addresses one of the critical social issues facing the country, which is access to housing.”

Some of the key qualifying criteria factors of these homeowners are that they must not have previous government subsidies and not earn more than R40 000.

After the new owners received the keys to their houses, Sasol officials moved to an electricity substation, which Sasol upgraded and unveiled Phase 1 and 2 of the substation.

Nomia Machebe, Sasol’s manager of media and communications, said this initiative aims to support the delivery of electricity to the growing population in eMbalenhle.

“The infrastructure is a critical component to helping the Govan Mbeki Municipality to reduce the occurrence of unplanned power outages because of overloading of the infrastructure,” said Machebe.

Sasol officials and others then made their way to the Sasol Recreation Club where they handed over nine two-way Motorola radios to the value of R200 000 to Govan Mbeki Municipality’s traffic department.

This donation follows a previous donation of radios to the municipal emergency services last year. Machebe said the two-way radios will ensure reliable communication, even in areas with cell phone network failures.

Sasol will also maintain the communication network repeaters and external antennas covering most of the Govan Mbeki municipal area, at no cost to the municipality. The radios come with a one-year warranty and have been programmed for immediate use.

“These initiatives are in line with our Sasol values, where we always strive to empower our people, uplift communities, and ensure a safer and more sustainable future for all,” said Siyaya.
