Suspected serial killer from eMbalenhle disputes DNA results

The court postponed the case to July 31.

DNA linked the alleged serial rapist and killer, Themba Shongwe, to the rape and murder of three girls from eMbalenhle.

State prosecutor Tracy Keen-Horak said this during Shongwe’s trial on July 23 at the Secunda Regional Court after Shongwe disputed the DNA results linking him to the crimes.

Early this year, Warrant Officer Phokela Mogashoa, a forensic expert for the SAPS, testified about the DNA linking.

Shongwe then told the court he wanted to see the DNA report and the specific sample that linked him to the rape and murder of three girls.

Lerato Nkutha (11) was raped and murdered in May 2018. Her body was dumped on a street in Ext 17 in eMbalenhle.

Shongwe said he was surprised he was linked to the rape and murder of three girls while he was charged with the rape and murder of five young girls.

He still disputed the DNA results that linked him to these cases and told the court that computers and papers are manmade and programmed by humans. Shongwe said he would not accept something he did not do.

The murdered girls are Cynthia Masilela, Mihle Zingamo (14) and cousins Nokulunga Nkutha (13), and Lerato Nkutha (11).

The Secunda Regional Court postponed the case to July 31.
