Court postpones Sasol Secunda’s pollution case

The court postponed the case to July 25.

The ongoing court case against Sasol was on the roll at Evander Regional Court on July 5, and Sasol’s spokesperson, Nomia Machebe, represented the company.

This comes after former Sasol employee Ian Erasmus took the company to court in September 2022 for water pollution.

While Erasmus worked at Sasol as a senior process controller in 2005, he told his managers several times about a large leaking valve allegedly polluting the water.

Erasmus claimed they did nothing about the problem, so he emailed senior management. After finding no joy there, he contacted the company’s ethics line.

According to Erasmus, his senior managers began harassing and intimidating him after he called the ethics line. He said he was victimised and eventually suspended in 2017.

“I lost my job, my wife and my family because of all this,” said Erasmus.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment heard about the matter and opened a criminal case against Sasol.

The magistrate of the Evander Regional Court was on leave on July 5, and the magistrate standing in for her postponed the case to July 25.
