504 suspects arrested in Tshwane during Operation Shanela

The SAPS held a successful operation which led to the arrests of 504 individuals during Operation Shanela.

The Tshwane police arrested 504 suspects for various crimes across the City of Tshwane on July 13. The activities included patrols in high-crime areas, compliance inspections, and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.

These operations were carried out with the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng traffic, local law enforcement, the metro police and the community.

Warrant officer Johan van Dyk said CPFs and officers from different SAPS stations also played a critical role.

“By the end of the weekend, about 224 individuals were arrested for offences such as assault, housebreaking, public intoxication, driving under the influence, and armed robbery.”

Tshwane detective teams apprehended 241 suspects including those involved in serious crimes. One suspect was arrested for murder, 11 for assault, six for rape and 75 for GBV.

A total of seven liquor premises were inspected, which resulted in the closure of four premises and the confiscation of 236 000ml of illicit liquor for violating the Liquor Act.

About 50 undocumented immigrants were detained for deportation and an individual was arrested for employing illegal immigrants.

Illegal alcohol was confiscated during the operation.

“During Operation Shanela, 882 individuals and 485 vehicles were inspected, with eight vehicles tested to determine if they were stolen.

“Seven premises were also searched, leading to the arrest of 27 individuals for drunk driving and three suspects for drug possession and dealing, with eight ziplock bags and two Mandrax tablets found in their possession,” said Van Dyk.

An individual was arrested and charged with bribery after attempting to bribe police officers while they were executing their duties.

“A total of 69 Aarto traffic infringement notices were issued amounting to a total of R21 000,” said Van Dyk.
