Sakhile Rise hosts awareness event

The organisation's main focus is to ensure the safety and prosperity of young people in rural areas, by introducing them to extra mural activities and providing them with opportunities.

Sakhile Rise (SR) hosted a fundraising event on June 16 at Rooikoppen Community Hall. SR is an NPO which has been operational since 2022.

The organisation’s main focus is to ensure the safety and prosperity of young people in rural areas, by introducing them to extra mural activities and providing them with opportunities.

“We take the youth who are in difficult situations and teach them the necessary skills they would need to run and operate a business,” said Buti Tsotetsi, the acting secretary of SR.

The theme of the SR event was ‘The plight of an African child’ where they tackled multiple issues faced by children due to equality.

Attendees could expect performances from various groups in poetry, drama and dance, as well as informative speeches from outstanding community leaders.

Speakers from GS College, Standerton Correctional Services, the Department of Social Development and Lekwa municipality were present.

According to Tsotetsi, the event was a success despite minor communication issues that caused the agenda to be tackled late.

The SR’s current main goal is to create a platform for future development and alleviate inequality faced by young people.

“We are still experiencing what we did 30 years ago, only in a different form,” said Tsotetsi.

One of the projects SR is taking on is working with the Department of Home Affairs to supply young children in rural areas with proper documentation and identification. SR is also planning on hosting the Lekwa festival in the near future.

“It’s going to be a massive event, where people of all cultures can come together and celebrate each other,” Tsotetsi explained.

Indigenous games, fashion and food will be offered.
