GMM to receive an estimated R1.2b for eMbalenhle sewer projects

Mayor says GMM has also allocated R10m to upgrade water pipes in Bethal and Mzinoni and completed the refurbishment of the eMbalenhle Ext 15 reservoir that will also supply Charl Cilliers with water.

Nhlakanipho Zuma, Govan Mbeki Municipality executive mayor, said during the State of the Municipality Address the government promised to absolve the municipality from its sewage crisis.

Zuma said the municipality has just received confirmation of a budget of around R1.2b for the eMbalenhle sewer projects.

“We have also allocated R10m to upgrade water pipes in Bethal and Mzinoni and completed the refurbishment of the eMbalenhle Ext 15 reservoir that will also supply Charl Cilliers with water. Sasol is currently supplying water to that area.

“We are replacing all asbestos pipes with PVC pipes to minimise water leaks,” said Zuma.

He said the GMM is also sourcing service providers for the Eendracht sewer project, where the municipality terminated the contract because of poor performance.

The incomplete sewer project in Ext 5 eMbalenhle was handed over to the Gert Sibande District Municipality to be its implementing agent.
