Water trucks to be available as Rand Water begins infrastructure maintenance work

Mayor requested the community to store enough water beforehand.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) is geared to supply water to communities when Rand Water (RW) begins its infrastructure maintenance programme. Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma told the media the first period of water interruptions will be from June 24 to 28.

According to Zuma, RW will begin with the transformer upgrade for its notified maximum demand increase at Trichardt on June 24, from 08:00 to June 28 at 17:00.

Zuma said the upgrading of the transformer will affect the power supply at the Trichardt booster pump station which will supply water to Region One (Bethal/eMzinoni).

The backup power generator will pump water for the duration of the power outage. Water trucks will also be on standby to assist with water supply, should the backup generator experience challenges during the shutdown period.

Zuma said the connection of the new RW N6 line to the old N6 line will be from July 5 at 18:00 to July 7 at 12:00 and will affect the water supply to the GMM for 54 hours.

“Rand Water will not pump water to GMM during the shutdown period. GMM will assist the Region One community with six water trucks during the shutdown period,” said Zuma.

Another 10 trucks will be deployed in Region Two (Trichardt, Secunda, Evander, Kinross, Leandra and Eendracht), while eight trucks will assist Region Three (eMbalenhle and Charl Celliers).

Zuma also said the installation of new infrastructure that provides augmentation and flexibility at Mapleton Station included a new engine room and new disinfection plants.

This will affect, in a worst-case scenario, the water supply to GMM for 77 hours. Rand Water will not be pumping water to GMM in a worst-case scenario during the shutdown period.

Zuma said the municipality will also assist with water supply to the community using water trucks during the shutdown period. He requested the community to store enough water beforehand.
