Court in Secunda again postpones trial of alleged serial killer

Themba Shongwe is accused of killing five girls between the ages of 11 and 16 years.

The Secunda Regional Court has again postponed the trial of alleged serial killer Themba Shongwe, because his state-appointed attorney was not available on June 10.

The case was rolled over to June 25. Shongwe is accused of killing five girls between the ages of 11 and 16 years.

From 2016 to 2018 the murders of Mihle Zingamo, Cynthia Masilela, and the cousins Lerato Nkutha and Nokulunga Nkutha sent shockwaves through the community of eMbalenhle.

The fifth girl’s identity remains a mystery as no one claimed her remains. She was buried as a pauper.

Two experts from the forensic laboratory in Pretoria were supposed to take the witness stand on June 10.

The community supported family members of the victims at the courthouse that day.

They told Ridge Times this case has been dragging on for too long because of the postponements due to the unavailability of the defence lawyer.
