GMM will soon establish 12 more townships

Soccer tournament planned in Standerton

The Govan Mbeki Municipality will soon have 12 new townships. This is according to Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma.

Zuma said the population in the Govan Mbeki municipal area is increasing at an unprecedented rate. The municipality has therefore responded with the acceleration of 12 township establishments.

These have been approved with services infrastructure being installed and will give the municipality over 50 000 sites delivered by 2026, including the Brendan Village.

A group of armed people previously invaded Brendan Village and grabbed the houses.

“We are not going to allow a situation of being hijacked. We are going to decide as a council about Brendan Village,” said Zuma.

The occupants in the past two years were fighting the GMM over Brendan Village’s electricity and water. They even interrupted a council meeting last year demanding Zuma’s attention.

Zuma told council last year that all the houses and other properties in Brendan Village are registered under one title deed and occupied while the municipality was still busy with a township establishment process.
