Lekwa explains reprogramming of prepaid meters

Lekwa urged residents to ensure that all tokens are entered into the meter before programming take place.

The 20-digit token identifier on all prepaid electricity meters will expire in November this year, ceasing to accept electricity tokens.

Malosi Lamola, municipal manager of the Lekwa Municipality, has already sent a directive on April 16 about the implications for residents.

Customers using standard transfer specification meters will be unable to use tokens unless their meters undergo reprogramming.

Units currently on the meter will be available after the reset. Lekwa urged residents to ensure that all tokens are entered into the meter before programming takes place.

Professional contractors have been appointed to carry out the reprogramming process. Technicians furthermore, will need access to a property to complete this process.

“Meter reprogramming will not impact electricity supply. Obstructing or evading an officially accredited service provider to carry out a task is a municipal by-law offence,” the letter read.

A penalty will be issued. Contractors will be easily identified by clearly marked clothing and identification and should an identity need to be verified, contact the technical department on 072 356 0242 or 067 387 3317.

Customers with conventional credit meters will not be affected. Before reprogramming, take note of the following:

• ensure that old, unused credit tokens are entered on your meter before entering the key change tokens;
(failure to do so, will render them unusable afterwards)

• enter tokens in chronological order from oldest to latest date; and

• credit on the meter will not be affected.

Should you want to expedite the change-over or need more information, contact the following upgrade platforms:

• EqualizerPay+ Call Centre on 087 056 9505 or
• EqualizerPay+ WhatsApp on 060 805 5616.

The MM concluded this letter by saying Lekwa looks forward to cooperation in serving the community.
