Frequent sewage spills worry residents of Secunda

The blocked sewage line creates a stench and bubbles up into homes on Duiker Street, Golden Village, in Secunda.

Residents on Duiker Street, Golden Village, face a continuous battle with weekly sewage spills, which pose a health hazard.

Residents contacted the Ridge Times, hoping for the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) to look into the matter.

According to the residents, the blocked drain has been a long-time problem, and they claim the cause is the infrastructure.

When visiting the area, a resident showed the journalist the unbearable state and stench of the sewage bubbling up in the en-suite shower.

“This is the second time this month the sewage is overflowing. Every month, we have this problem. The stench is unbearable.

“The water takes an hour to drain out of the bath and then pushes out to wherever there is a hole. We can’t even flush our toilets without the water pushing up,” said the resident.

The resident said the only thing they could do was make noise of the issue.

Ridge Times was on site when GMM employees were there to unblock the drains. According to the resident, it was the second time in a week.

“These are unlivable conditions. It is unacceptable and irresponsible of the GMM to hire these contractors who don’t do a proper job. We are expected to vote but don’t get proper services,” said the resident.

GMM spokesperson Donald Green apologised to the affected communities for the inconvenience caused and said they would send a team to inspect and respond accordingly.

The GMM appeals to residents to report service delivery challenges through its call centre on 0800 6000 01/2/4 or WhatsApp a message to 083 790 0659 or 082 343 2422.

“This will help to speed up the response and resolve issues promptly,” said Green.
