Lekwa Community Safety Forum strikes a blow to crime

The forum included the police, the Department of Social Development, Thuthukani ward committees and the CPF.

The Lekwa Community Safety Forum held an operation in Thuthukani on May 9, during which drugs were found.

The forum, which included the police, the Department of Social Development, Thuthukani ward committees and the CPF, acted swiftly on alert of suspicion that drugs were sold to learners of Zikhetheleni Secondary School.

With the assistance of sniffer dogs, the team, headed by the MMC for Community Services and Safety, Seipati Modise, and HOD for Community Services and Safety Thobeka Mtshiselwa, searched classrooms and learners.

The operation did not stop at the school premises, as it went deeper into the heart of the community. Two houses suspected of being used to sell drugs to learners were targeted. The team found a variety of substances in each of the two houses and two people were arrested.

Modise said this is a significant step towards breaking the cycle of substance abuse within the community.
She emphasised the importance of implementing prevention and intervention strategies.

“Through engagement with community members and stakeholders, efforts can be directed towards addressing underlying issues such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to support services, which often contribute to the popularity of substance abuse.

“Moreover, the operation served as a reminder of the essential role that community participation plays in ensuring safety and security.

“The active involvement of local ward committees, the CPF, and concerned citizens not only strengthens the effectiveness of law enforcement initiatives but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility within the community” said Modise.
