The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested a 43-year-old police officer on May 1 for allegations of corruption.

Allegedly, the police sergeant attached to the Bronkhorstspruit Detective Services worked the night shift on April 6. Performing his duties, he escorted a suspect in a driving under the influence of alcohol case to the bank at about 03:00 to withdraw money for bail.

The suspect withdrew R1 000 and gave it to the sergeant as bail payment. The sergeant then allegedly wrote R500 as the amount paid for bail instead of R1 000.

The suspect, who paid the money, reported the incident to the police. The corruption case against the sergeant was reported to IPID for investigation.

The IPID investigators arrested the sergeant, who appeared in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court facing a corruption charge. The court postponed the case for further investigation.
