Makers Village in Cullinan empowers young and old

Makers Market in Cullinan equips the elderly with skills to earn a living.

The Makers Village helps the elderly and the youth from Cullinan and Rayton with skills training and workshops.
Makers Village can best be described as a modern-day community centre.

As it grows, it will continue to add workshops and services the community needs.

Tania Bryant, CEO of the Makers Foundation, said, “The tool-sharing facility is free. People who have gone through training on equipment can use the machines at no charge. They only pay a fee for electricity and bring their own raw materials.”

Workshops that have been presented include woodwork, silver jewellery, a sewing and design studio, a leather workshop, a blacksmith workshop, a ceramic workshop and kitchen and hospitality training.

“They also provide work readiness programmes in the hospitality industry for people with disability. Day-to-day, we operate a restaurant, craft shop, guest house, and function facility to enable them to sustain our operations.”

“Our plans for 2024 are to establish a community vegetable garden and to set up an aeroponic farming training facility for people with disability to open an aluminium refinery,” said Bryant.

The Makers Foundation is an NPO that developed the Makers Village in Cullinan about seven months ago. It creates places for connecting people and building and enhancing places that advance community resilience.”
