Bus driver faces serious charges after incident in Sakhile

He appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on April 18 on charges of reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide.

A mother of two, Hlengiwe Zondo, lost her life on April 16 at about 05:30 after a bus crashed into their shack in Vilakazi Street, Sakhile.

According to the communications department of Sakhile police, the driver of Magogo Bus Services, with about 10 passengers, drove down the street facing the direction of the Roman Catholic Church.

The brakes might have failed. The bus gathered momentum and the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and it went over the L-shaped shack.

There are stones next to the road as well.

SAPS were quickly on the scene and for safety purposes alerted the ambulance services, firefighters and the pathologist.

One child (15) sustained serious injuries and was taken to Standerton Hospital and then transferred to Witbank Hospital.

The bus driver ran away but later handed himself over to Secunda SAPS. They called Sakhile police, who fetched him and he was taken into custody.

Mfana Mboweni (59) appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on April 18 on charges of reckless and negligent driving and culpable homicide.

According to SAPS, it is suspected the bus was unworthy and an additional charge may be added to the docket.

The bus was impounded for clinical testing and towing services transported it to Standerton Police Station.
