Blade, a horse recently rescued by Wet Nose in Bronkhorstspruit, died of colic on January 27. This animal faced many battles, such as a severe protein deficiency, which stripped him of his beautiful coat and burdened his liver.

He was saved in Boekenhoutskloofdrift last month.

The Wet Nose team found Blade with lantana poisoning, a severe protein deficiency, neglected and untreated hooves, an untreated knee injury and an abscess on his leg caused by an improperly administered injection.

Blade developed colic, a term for abdominal pain in a horse which covers numerous types of gastrointestinal distresses such as infections, food intolerances, food allergies or autoimmune diseases.

This painful condition in horses can come on suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, and while the vast majority of horses recover, it is a leading cause of death in horses according to Declqan Rodocanachi from Wet Nose.

“The Wet Nose team worked tirelessly through the night, did everything in our power to ease his pain and bring him comfort, but as the night turned into day, it became apparent our gentle giant might not pull through.”

Rodocanachi said Blade touched their hearts and showed them the true meaning of resilience and strength.

“Blade will forever be a part of our story, a gentle soul who taught us so much about courage, resilience, and hope.”
