Three people die on New Year’s Day on N12 near Delmas
The exact cause of the accident will be investigated.
Three people died when the bakkie that they were travelling in overturned after the driver lost control.
The driver and two passengers were certified dead at the scene.
Vusi Shongwe, the Mpumalanga MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, said he is saddened by this and cautioned motorist to remain on high alert at all times when on the road.
Shongwe blamed human error for most of the accidents that occurred in Mpumalanga since the beginning of the holiday season.
Shongwe called on those returning to work and driving long distances to rest sufficiently along the way.
“Motorists should always prioritise their safety and that of others on the road,” said Shongwe.
“Fatigue and alcohol affects a driver negatively and may lead to accidents.
“Motorists need to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles before taking to the road,” said Shongwe.
