Water levels at Grootdraai Dam stand at 95.7%

In the Gert Sibande District, most dams recorded declines in water levels, a few slight improvements and only Vygeboom Dam remained unchanged at 100.9%.

Mpumalanga water levels continue to record a slight drop, but remain satisfactory.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) encouraged the public to continue using water sparingly.

According to the weekly state of reservoirs report, dated June 5, most listed dams are above 90% with some above the 100% mark and the lowest level above 80%, more than the levels recorded at the same period last year.

The average dam levels recorded a slight decline from 99.0% to 98.9%.

In the Water Management Areas (WMAs), the Olifants recorded a slight increase from 90.4% to 90.5% while the Inkomati-Usuthu dropped from 99.6% to 99.4%.

In terms of districts, Ehlanzeni and Gert Sibande recorded drops in water levels in line with the drop in the Inkomati-Usuthu water management areas, dropping from 98.2% to 97.8% and 100.4% to 100.3% respectively.

Dams that recorded declines include Grootdraai, dropping from 96.4% to 95.7%, Jericho from 91.6% to 91.0%, Westoe from 85.6% to 82.7% and Heyshope from 101.0% to 100.9%.

Nooitgedacht and Morgenstond dams recorded slight improvements recording increases from 100.4% to 100.6% and 99.9% to 100.0% respectively.

The department also reminded the public that South Africa is a water-scarce country and it is everybody’s responsibility to conserve and prevent water wastage as water has no substitute.
