WATCH: Parts of Secunda are powerless due to a burnt mini-substation

Secunda is without power.

Parts of the Secunda are experiencing power outages due to a burnt mini-substation along Nelson Mandela Drive.

According to GMM spokesperson Donald Green, a team has been assigned to repair and restore electricity.

An estimated time on how long it would take to restore electricity could not be given at this point.

“Our team is working around the clock to ensure power is restored,” said Green.

He advises affected customers to treat all electrical wiring as live and turn off all electrical appliances to prevent further damage. GMM apologises for the inconvenience caused.

Reports came in of businesses, shoppers, residents and onlookers around the area hearing and seeing an explosion and fire coming from a manhole at the traffic circle near Five Star SPAR along Nelson Mandela Drive.

“I heard the explosion. Initially, I thought it was an accident, but when I looked I noticed white smoke,” said Adriaan Grobbelaar of GTR/MCR who was nearby.

He said he immediately informed his manager to arrange for the fire department to be sent out. He also approached the scene to warn oncoming motorists of the hazard ahead.
